Devanagari is a beautiful, logical script. Unlike English, where spelling and pronunciation rarely match, Devanagari is almost perfectly phonetic — every letter makes exactly one sound, always. This makes it far more learnable than most learners expect.
Days 1–3: The Vowels (स्वर)
Start with the 11 primary vowels: अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ऋ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ. Spend one day learning, recognising, and copying each group. Use BhasaLearn's flashcard set for Devanagari vowels.
Days 4–9: The Consonants (व्यञ्जन)
There are 33 consonants grouped by their place of articulation (throat, palate, teeth, lips). Learn them in their natural groups: क group (क ख ग घ ङ), च group (च छ ज झ ञ), and so on. Two groups per day for 6 days.
Days 10–11: Vowel Marks (मात्राहरू)
Matra are the shorthand forms of vowels that attach to consonants. For example: क + ि = कि (ki). Learning all 10 matras and practising attaching them to all 33 consonants is essential before you can read real words.
Days 12–14: Reading Practice
With letters and matras mastered, start reading actual Nepali words and simple sentences. Begin with body parts, numbers, and common nouns. By day 14, you should be able to decode any Nepali word, even if you don't understand its meaning yet.
