Letter writing (पत्र लेखन) is a compulsory part of Nepali language examinations at BLE, SEE, and NEB levels. It is also a practical life skill for anyone communicating in a formal Nepali context. This guide covers both formal and informal letter formats.
Formal Letter (औपचारिक पत्र) Structure
A formal Nepali letter follows this structure:
- मिति (Date) — top right: e.g., मिति २०८१ असोज १५
- प्रति (To) — e.g., प्रधानाध्यापक महोदय
- विषय (Subject) — brief statement of purpose
- महोदय/महोदया — salutation
- Main body — explain your request or information clearly
- Closing — भवदीय / आपको विश्वासी
- Your name, class, roll number
Informal Letter (अनौपचारिक पत्र) Structure
Informal letters to friends or family are more relaxed. Start with the location and date, address the recipient warmly (प्रिय साथी / मेरा प्रिय मित्र), write your message in a conversational tone, and close with इति, तपाईंको साथी + your name.
Exam-Specific Tips
In exams, write the letter on one side. Leave margins. Use Devanagari numerals for dates (२०८१ not 2081 unless instructed otherwise). Keep sentences short and direct. Examiners prefer clarity over complexity in letter writing.
