Optional Mathematics is an elective subject in Grade 9 and 10 that goes beyond the Compulsory Math curriculum to include topics like: Trigonometric identities, Matrices and determinants, Vectors, Coordinate geometry, Probability theory, and introductory Calculus.
Who Should Take Optional Math?
You should take Optional Mathematics if: (1) You consistently score above 75% in Compulsory Math without much struggle, (2) You plan to pursue Science or Engineering in Grade 11, (3) You enjoy problem-solving and abstract thinking. If any of these don't apply, it is better to score high in another elective.
Key Topics for Maximum Marks
Trigonometry and Coordinate Geometry together account for roughly 40% of the Optional Math paper. Matrices and Determinants are another 15–20%. Master these three areas first before spending time on other topics.
Scoring Strategy
Optional Math papers reward students who show clear, systematic working. Even partial solutions earn marks. Always attempt every question — write as many correct steps as you know, even if you cannot complete the full solution.
