Assertion-Reason questions cause high student error rates because distinguishing between Option A ('R is the correct explanation of A') and Option B ('R is not the correct explanation of A') requires causal logic.
The 3-Step Verification Algorithm
- Evaluate Assertion independently: Is statement A scientifically TRUE or FALSE? (If false, the answer is immediately Option D).
- Evaluate Reason independently: Is statement R scientifically TRUE or FALSE? (If false, the answer is immediately Option C).
- Insert 'BECAUSE' between A and R: Does Statement A occur because of Statement R? If yes, Option A; if both are true statements but unrelated mechanisms, Option B.
