Typing fluently in Devanagari is a highly practical skill for students, government employees, journalists, and content creators across Nepal and India. With the right approach, you can go from typing 0 words per minute to 40 WPM in just 6 weeks.
Choosing Your Keyboard Layout
There are two main keyboard layouts for Nepali typing: the Traditional Nepali layout (used for the Preeti font) and the Unicode-based layout (Romanised input). For professional and future-proof use, always learn Unicode typing. Traditional Preeti typing is becoming obsolete and is not compatible with modern devices.
The Unicode Approach
In Unicode Nepali typing (also called Romanised or Transliteration input), you type phonetic Romanised letters that automatically convert to Devanagari. For example, typing "k" gives क, "kh" gives ख, "g" gives ग. This approach is intuitive for English typists and is supported natively on all modern operating systems.
Practising Conjunct Characters (संयुक्त अक्षर)
The most challenging part of Devanagari typing is conjunct characters — combinations like क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र. Dedicate 10 minutes per day to typing sentences that contain these characters until they become automatic. BhasaLearn's typing practice section has dedicated drills for all conjuncts.
Daily Practice Routine
Practise for 20 minutes per day: 5 minutes on vowels, 10 minutes on sentences, and 5 minutes on your current weak spots. Track your WPM weekly. Most dedicated learners reach 25 WPM in 3 weeks and 40 WPM in 6 weeks.
