Since 2016, Nepal has moved from a percentage-based grading system to a GPA (Grade Point Average) system for both SEE and NEB examinations. Understanding this system is crucial for planning your academic future.
The GPA Scale
Nepal's NEB uses a 4.0 GPA scale: A+ (90–100% = 4.0 GPA), A (80–89% = 3.6), B+ (70–79% = 3.2), B (60–69% = 2.8), C+ (50–59% = 2.4), C (40–49% = 2.0), D (30–39% = 1.6), E (below 30% = fail).
What GPA Do You Need?
For admission to MBBS (Medicine) in Nepal, you typically need a GPA of 3.2 or above in NEB Grade 12, with A+ in Chemistry and Biology. For BE/B.Tech (Engineering), a GPA of 2.8 in PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Math) is the minimum, with top institutions requiring 3.6+. For Management programmes, a GPA of 2.4 is typically sufficient, though merit scholarships require 3.6+.
How the GPA is Calculated
Your final NEB GPA is the average of your Grade Point in each subject, weighted by credit hours. Practical/Internal marks (typically 25% of total) are separate from theory marks (75%). Both must be passed independently — you cannot compensate a fail in practicals with a high theory score.
Improvement Examinations
Students who score below the required GPA for their target programme can appear in the NEB improvement examination the following year, retaking specific subjects to improve their GPA.
