Nepal's public education system has undergone significant reform over the past decade. Understanding how the different examinations connect — and what they mean for higher education and employment — is essential for every student and parent.
The Three Major Public Examinations
BLE — Basic Level Examination (Grade 8)
Administered by the National Examinations Board (NEB), the BLE is Nepal's first nationwide standardised examination. It tests students in five core subjects and results are used for secondary school admission in many institutions.
SEE — Secondary Education Examination (Grade 10)
The SEE replaced the old SLC (School Leaving Certificate) in 2016. It is commonly referred to as "the iron gate" of Nepali education. SEE results determine access to Grade 11 streams (Science, Management, Humanities, Education).
NEB +2 — National Examinations Board Grade 11–12
The NEB examinations at the end of Grade 11 and Grade 12 are the final stage before university. Grade 12 results are particularly important for entrance into Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu University, and other institutions.
The Grading System
Nepal uses a Grade Point Average (GPA) system: A+ (4.0 GPA, 90–100%), A (3.6, 80–89%), B+ (3.2, 70–79%), B (2.8, 60–69%), C+ (2.4, 50–59%), C (2.0, 40–49%), D (1.6, 30–39%), and E (below 30%, fail).
